C.: d.c. did you see what S-3 did while he was out of The Kennel?
d.: No, what did he do?
C.: He picked up some kind of a blade. It’s made of metal, but it’s not sharp. I don’t know how he snuck it into The Kennel. I thought they shook down all the inmates before they could come back in.
d.: Well, Cal.E., let that be a lesson to you. Even though there is a security staff at The Kennel, we must be vigilant. If we don’t look out for ourselves, we could get seriously hurt. A good rule of thumb is to trust no inmates and always be aware of your surroundings…
C.: So, we need to be vigilantes? Isn’t that why some of the inmates are in The Kennel< because they were protecting other people, and someone else got hurt? They were convicted of a crime, even though they were trying to keep someone else from getting hurt.
d.: Not vigilantes, vigilant.
C.: Isn’t that the root word for vigilante?
d.: I suppose it is, but that’s not what I’m saying. We don’t need to do anything to anyone but treat the inmates for medical problems and look out for ourselves and our coworkers. We aren’t to administer any punishment to the inmates. That’s not our job!
C.: Back to the vigilantes. So, you mean that laws only apply to certain people? Don’t cops do the same thing that the vigilantes in The Kennel do sometimes, prevent someone from hurting someone else by using deadly force?
d.: No, Cal.E., laws apply to all citizens of our country (except the ones who make them, apparently).m Cops are under the same laws as we are when they're not working.
C.: So, if an off-duty officer kills someone that’s trying to rape or murder someone else, s/he may end up in The Kennel, then?
d.: No, they’re allowed to do that, as long as they have a shield.
C.: Then why do vigilantes go to The Kennel? Like you said, security officers can’t be everywhere at once, so I assume that police officers can’t be either. Aren’t vigilantes just helping the police force out?
d.: That’s all the time we have for today, folks. Please join us tomorrow for another episode of Cal.E.’s Korner.
