Somedays won't end ever
And somedays pass on be I'll be working here forever,
At least until I die, dammed if you do, dammed if you don't
I'm supposed to get a raise week, you know damn well I won't.
Workin' for a livin' (workin')
Workin' for a livin' (workin')
Workin' for a livin', livin' and workin'
I'm taking what they giving 'cause I'm working for a livin'.
Hey I'm not complaining 'cause I really need the work
Hitting up my buddy's got me feeling like a jerk
Hundred dollar car note, two hundred rent.
I get a check on Friday, but it's all ready spent.
Workin' for a livin' (workin')
Workin' for a livin' (workin')
Workin' for a livin', livin' and workin'
I'm taking what they giving 'cause I'm working for a livin'.
Whoa, Workin' for a livin' whoa, taking what they giving
Whoa, Workin' for a livin' whoa, ooh
Bus boy, bartender, ladies of the night
Grease monkey, ex-junky, winner of the fight
Walking on the streets its really all the same
Selling souls, rock n' roll, any other day
Workin' for a livin' (workin')
Workin' for a livin' (workin')
Workin' for a livin', livin' and workin'
I'm taking what they giving 'cause I'm working for a livin'.
Workin' for a livin', livin' and workin'
I'm taking what they giving 'cause I'm working for a livin'.
Workin' for a livin', livin' and workin'

C.: Hi, d.c. since you got off work on time, I just called to talk. How’s it going?
d.: I don’t have time to talk Cal.E. I’m studying/
C.: I thought that you just got a raise. Why do you feel as though you need to advance your education?
d.: For three reasons, my fine feline friend. One is that I’ll need to pay for all my immunizations now, since The Kennel is no longer doing that. I can get that done at one of my doctors’ offices, though. It won’t be that expensive. The other two reasons are more important, though.
One is that I firmly believe that our unit will shut down in the next two years. I want to be able to stay close to home to work, but I’ve driven across Houston for many years to work. That doesn’t bother me as much as my third reason.
The third, and most important reason that I’m trying to further my education is that I believe that education, as well as learning ability, in general, is a slippery slope. When I first changed careers and went to take my prerequisites for nursing school, I had to retrain my brain to think differently. If I discontinue my education, I’m afraid I’ll lose that ability.
I had to use my powers of reasoning more than the powers I had been using for the last twenty-three years, which was mainly my power of observation.
Observing is good, and it’s helpful to a writer, but it isn’t the key to passing tests in a classroom setting. Reasoning is more important in a classroom setting. Ironically, as any seasoned professional will tell you, the power of observation is much more important in the real world than the power of reasoning. Always believe your eyes over anything else. Remember, only believe one-half of what you see, and none of what you hear. Sight is our most valuable sense, so use it wisely.
C.: Will do, d.c. (And, I’ll be very careful about asking d.c. how it’s going from now on. I barely have time to get dressed for my evening shift at The Kennely, now that I’ve talked to someone who was “too busy to talk.”) So, we’ll see you next time on Cal.E.’s Korner.
