Cal.E.'s Korner

C.: Hi, d.c., what are you doing on your day off from work at The Kennel? I’ve been trying to reach you so that we could do the blog early, but you didn’t ever answer.

d.: Oh, sorry, Cal.E. I forgot to tell you that I had a doctor’s appointment today after working out at the gym.

C.: How did that go?

d.: It went well, Cal.E. My cardiologist was so pleased with my test results that he said I may be able to get off all of my meds. I was so happy that I went to my favorite restaurant to celebrate with a bacon double cheese burger and chili cheese fries. I didn’t want to overdo it, though, so I had a diet soda. Why did you want to do the blog early?

C.: Oh, Okay, I just thought that I would have more time to spend with Tucker, but he’s studying anyway. So, I have some free time on my day off.

d.: What area of study is Tucker trying to get his Ph. D. in? And why does a henchman for a bully cat need an advanced degree? Can’t he extort money and food without going back to school?

C.: I don’t know why he needs another advanced degree, d.c. He just says that he wants to be a more well-rounded cat…

d.: He’s already pretty well-wounded if you ask me!

C.: Haha. He’s actually sensitive about his size and his weight. He can sing and dance and quote Shakespeare. Just because he’s a plus-sized cat doesn’t mean that he’s dumb or uneducated.

d.: I guess you’re right, Cal.E. Humans are often judged by their physical appearance, just like I was judging Tucker. Actually, I don’t care what he looks like, it’s just the company he keeps that bothers me.

C.: Do you mean Tom?

d.: Mainly, yes.

C.: That’s an interesting story. When Tucker and Tom met, Tucker saw a cat who needed a friend. He also saw an intelligent cat who could do more if he had been able to afford an education, so Tucker took it on himself to try to educate Tom, but Tom decided to take advantage of Tucker’s big heart. He talked Tucker into getting involved with his organization, and then had information on him. Tom used that information to keep Tucker under his thumb. Tucker didn’t see a way out of the situation for a while.

d.: And you’ll be caught up in that life, too, if you choose to marry Tucker.

C.: I said he didn’t see a way out, d.c. When Tucker gets his doctorate, he can go to work for The Kennel as a psychotic cat and help cats like Tom…

d.: I think you mean a psychiatric cat, or something along those lines. Anyway, is Tucker going to make as much money working at an honest job as he does with Tom?

C.: Well, no, but he’s trying to put up enough money now that it won’t matter. He said he just needs to pull one more big job, and then he’s done.

d.: I hear that a lot, working in the Human Kennel, Cal.E. It was just going to be one more big job, and then the criminal life would be over, but it’s never over for most of them. The taste of big, easy money is too much to leave behind. Besides, once one gets accustomed to a certain lifestyle, it’s hard to go back to living a mundane life.

C.: But it can be done. I came from royalty, and I got accustomed to living a mundane life with Mom, Dad, and my human and animal brothers and sisters, even though the dynamics changed from time to time. That happens in a foster family. I’ll change Tucker. I know I can do that. I just need to be patient with him. He has a good side. Everyone and every animal does.

d.: I don’t disagree with your last statement Cal.E., but people and animals need to want to change before they can change. Just be careful.

C.: Well, that’s all the time we have for today, folks. I need to go to Tucker’s house and change his color scheme. Black and white isn’t my style. I’m a colorful cat that needs bright colors to look at. All the time.
