BB: Well, my bath is ready. I’ll take the book into the bath and continue reading. The support on my back will make it easier for me not to ruin this manuscript. I'll sneak it back into the pile with d.c.'s other manuscripts when I get back to earth.
Meanwhile, on the other side of Houston, someone else is looking for pain relief.
The man known as “Baron Mayes” awoke to a severe headache. He knew who he was, but he had no idea where he was or how he had gotten there. He only knew, somehow, that he must get back to Houston. He knew that he had responsibilities in that large Texas town, he just didn’t know exactly what they were. He was also well aware that he had a medical problem that would need to be treated as soon as possible. He reasoned a large city would have a hospital with doctors who could treat him. He just needed to get back to civilization. Then, he would regroup.
The large man put his thumb out, asking each passing car for a ride. He asked each car going both ways, because he wasn’t sure if Houston lay to the east or west of where he was. He just knew that he needed to get somewhere that had a hospital that could treat his headache.
A small electric car stopped to offer the large man a ride. “Where are you headed, little lady?” Baron asked the tiny woman.
“Sugar Land,” The tiny woman stated.
“ I Need to go to Houston,” Baron began. “ I Need to find a good doctor to treat my head. I don’t know what happened, but I seem to be bleeding, and the pain is unbearable.”
“Well, your in luck,” The tiny woman began. “I’m a nurse, and Sugar Land has many satellite hospitals from the Texas Medical Center located in and around the city. Get in, and I’ll take you to a really good hospital.” Nadine smiled to herself as the large man entered her vehicle. She then accelerated enough to knock the large man back in his seat. As he did, she plunged a syringe full of ketamine into his right thigh. It wasn’t enough to kill a two-hundred-forty-five pound man, but it kept him unconscious until she got to the Sugar Land Police Department. There, she reported the man for assault and battery, showing the small marks on her arms where Baron had tried to grab her. Since the marks fit the large man’s hands, the police sergeant had Nadine fill out the paperwork for her complaint.
. Three officers came and picked the man up and put him on a bed in a cell. When he awoke, they read him his rights, asking if he could afford a lawyer. He answered in the affirmative, so they let him have his one phone call. He used it to call the only number he had memorized. His boss should be able to fill him in on the details of his life.
When the nurse for the jail came to examine him thirty minutes later, she closed the gash on his head with derma bond. She then offered him two 325 mg tablets of acetaminophen for his headache. It was, she said, the strongest thing he was authorized to give any of the inmates.*
