d.: Why did you send me this picture Cal.E.?C.: Because I need someone from this planet to interpret it for me. I asked my boss for a raise, and this is the picture he sent me. What does this mean?
d.: I think he is telling you to pound sand. C.: Which means?! d.: It means "no," Cal.E. He is not going to give you a raise. C.: Okay. I have not been working there very long. I suppose that is the reason for his refusal. I have another question for you, d.c. You have been working at the kennel for ten years. You should know something about the codes on our paychecks. If I text you a picture of my check, will you tell me what all the codes mean? d.: I will try, Cal.E., but there are some that I am not familiar with, even after ten years of receiving them. My wife takes care of all our finances. She says that we do not have enough money for me to buy the engine or clutch for my Mustang. It IS strange that she just bought a new car, though. C.: You might want to keep track of your money better, d.c. Anyway, can you tell me what these codes mean? I know what FICA means, as well as Federal Taxes, and Cat taxes are. But what is this tax for OVT? d.: That is your overtime tax. I thought you only worked four hours a day. Why are you paying that tax? C.: Well, I worked a double shift to make up for the personal day I took when I lost my wallet and was preparing to run from Tom and his hench cats. I thought that, if I worked eight hours on the next shift, the kennel would not dock me for that day. But look at this, my pay is the same, but the kennel docked me one day of personal leave. What is going on? d.: Well, with the overtime tax, you came out the same as if you had not worked the double shift. The kennel took out enough taxes to make your net pay the same, even though you, in theory, got paid for four extra hours C.: ??? d.: It is called a "graduated income tax." Basically, the more you earn, the more taxes you pay. It is to make things fairer for all concerned. C.: You mean, if I shovel dog poop eight hours a day, six days a week, I will get paid the same as if I only worked four 4 hour days?! d.: Or less C.: Well, maybe I should just retract my request for my personal leave day. Would that solve the problem? d,.: No, then the kennel will dock you for the four-hour shift you missed. C.: I am so confused. It sounds like it is NEVER a good idea to take a personal day. d.: I think you are catching on. C.: Then, why does our employer give us personal days, if we cannot use them? d.: ??? IDK , Cal.E. Welcome to the working pets' world!
