CAl.E.'s Corner

d.: Well, Cal.E. won't be joining us today. She said that she was "previously indisposed." I gather that means that she is calling in sick. All the talk about rare red meat made her hungry, so she probably ate too much. She did give me permission, though, to continue to read excerpts from her journal. Today is day 11.CAl.E's Corner Day Eleven on this strange planet called "Earth" has been baffling. Today's date (12/11/21) was what d.c. called a "palindrome." That means that a word, paragraph, number, or even a book will read the same whether it is read forward or backward. For instance, the names "Anna" and "Bob" will be the same when read either from the beginning or end. The whole YEAR 1991 was a palindrome! This language that humans speak is baffling. Let me give you one example of a word that sounds the same, but is spelled differently, and has different meanings when spelled differently. This is called a "homonym." The word can also be spelled the same, but have different meanings. Like the word, "bat" can mean a flying mammal, or it can mean a piece of wood or metal that one hits a baseball with, like the greatest baseball player of all time, Micheal Jordan! NO wait, that was BASKETBALL! He didn't do so well playing baseball, which just shows that it takes a unique skill set to succeed at that sport. Anyway, I was talking about the word "sense." Or "since." Or "cents." Or "scents." All of these spellings of the word are pronounced the same, but have different meanings. The first one can mean intelligence, as in "if you bet with Tom the Tabby again, you do NOT have any sense!" The second one means "it is so." As in "Since you bet with Tom the Tabby again, I will NOT lend you the money to get out of this mess!" The third one means money, as in, If you keep betting with Tom the Tabby,.you will not have a cent left! You bet all of your cents on the West. There was no such team even playing last night!" And the last one means smell. As in, "Cats have an excellent sense of smell. Felines can pick up scents better than dogs (and that comes in handy for me, because "The Tuxedo" has not had a bath in over a year!)" Do you see how confusing the human language can be so confusing to a being who is not familiar with it? This has been Cal.E.'s Corner, with CAl.E. Kat, hoping that you have enough sense to read my blog tomorrow!
