Midnight, not a sound from the pavement
Has the moon lost her memory?
She is smiling alone
In the lamplight, the withered leaves collect at my feet
And the wind begins to moan
Memory, all alone in the moonlight
I can dream of the old days
Life was beautiful then
I remember the time I knew what happiness was
Let the memory live again
Every street lamp seems to beat
A fatalistic warning
Someone mutters and the street lamp sputters
And soon it will be morning
Daylight, I must wait for the sunrise
I must think of a new life
And I mustn't give in
When the dawn comes, tonight will be a memory too
And a new day will begin
Burnt out ends of smoky days
The stale, cold smell of morning
A street lamp dies, another night is over
Another day is dawning
Touch me, it's so easy to leave me
All alone with the memory
Of my days in the sun
If you touch me, you'll understand what happiness is
Look, a new day has begun

d.: Wow! I just read that scientist believe that there is no such thing as an adult with an eidetic memory. I’m going to enter the World’s Best Memory Contest and prove them wrong….If I can remember where it is, when it is, in what publication I read that article, what day it is, what month it is…And, I was going to do something, but I can’t remember what it was (ring) Oh, hi, Cal.E., I’m surprised to hear your voice.
C.: Don’t you remember that I said I have five minutes between campaign speeches and catnaps today, and that you needed to call me at exactly this time so that we would have five minutes to discuss what to write our blog about today?
d.: I’m sorry, I don’t recall that conversation.
C.: …Anyway, I can give you something to write about. I can’t publish it on this planet, because then my ex-husband, King Tom, will know that it was me who did it, and he’ll have me executed.
d.: Wow! This must be something really big. Tell me what it is.
C.: I’d rather show you.
d.: Why is a cat shredding paper that dangerous for you to show on your planet?
C.: Because that’s the official vote counter. He’s taking the votes that he doesn’t agree with and shredding them. Since he’s employed by King Tom, I suppose that all the votes he’s shredding are mine.
d.: I thought that the election wasn’t until November.
C.: The in-person voting is from November 15, 9 a.m. to 9:21 a.m., but this planet allows early voting. It began on the fifteenth of this month.
d.: Do you think that the vote counter will shred your votes in the in-person election, too?
C.: No. Those votes are watched closely. However, since we only have twenty-one minutes to vote on that day, most of the votes are cast early.
d.: So, if you get enough votes in those twenty-one minutes to override all the votes that King Tom gets during the early election, you’ll still win the election, correct?
C.: I suppose so, but how am I going to do that?
d.: Don’t worry, I have a plan.
C.: And that would be?
d.: That’s all the time we have for today, folks. Please join us tomorrow for another episode of Cal.E.’s Korner.
