I know you've heard the stories
But they all sound too good to be true
You've heard about a place called home
But there doesn't seem to be one for you
So one more night you cry yourself to sleep
And drift off to a distant dream
Where love takes you in and everything changes
A miracle starts with the beat of a heart
When love takes you home and says you belong here
The loneliness ends and a new life begins
When love takes you in
And somewhere while you're sleeping
Someone else is dreaming too
Counting down the days until
They hold you close and say I love you
And like the rain that falls into the sea
In a moment what has been is lost in what will be
When love takes you in everything changes
A miracle starts with the beat of a heart
And this love will never let you go
There is nothing that could ever cause this love to lose its hold
When love takes you in everything changes
A miracle starts with the beat of a heart
When love takes you home and says you belong here
The loneliness ends and a new life begins
When love takes you in it takes you in for good
When love takes you in

d.: I’ll get back to the present tomorrow. Today, in honor of National Adoption Day, I want to revisit a conversation that Cal.E. and I had a few months ago. This blog post is entitled “A Place Called Adoption.”
A PLACE CALLED ADOPTION
d.: Cal.E., when are your mom and dad returning from their trip?
C.: In a couple of days, and I’m excited to see them, as well as the new addition to the family.
d.: What new addition?
C.: Well, every time Mom and Dad go on a trip, they bring home a human hairless kitten. I haven’t had one of those to play with for a while, so it will be a nice change of pace for me.
d.: I think that your mom and dad are a little past having a baby, Cal.E.
C.: I wouldn’t be too sure, d.c. Dad’s thought that many times, and we still get new additions to our family.
d.: But, your mom and dad are past the age to have babies.
C.: That doesn’t matter to humans, d.c.
d.: ???!!
C.: Don’t you know how humans have babies, d.c.? You’ve been married forever, and you’re–
d.: I know how old I am, Cal.E., but, why do you think that your mom and dad will bring home a baby, when they stopped having them years ago? Didn’t your parents ever teach you the facts of life?
C.: Oh, sure, sure. And, I have fourteen kittens. I know how animals have their babies, but humans form their families differently on this planet.
d.: How so?
C.: Well, first, the phone rings. Then, Mom tells Dad that he must go to some place called “Walmart” because they need several things. Dad doesn’t want to go, because he says that Walmart is his version of “Hell on Earth.” Mom then asks him if he wants another baby, and Dad says, “Yes.” Then he gets his keys, gets in his truck, and goes to Walmart. When he gets back home, Mom looks at the stuff he bought and says that she forgot to tell him to get several things, so he must go back to his “Hell on Earth,” which she says is a necessary evil. A few hours later, the doorbell rings, and it’s either a pizza delivery, or a man or a woman with a baby. If it’s the latter, Mom and Dad sit at the table and sign several forms. Then, the baby smiles, and Mom and Dad fall in love with him or her. That’s how human families are formed on this planet.
d.: I think that you may be a little confused, Cal.E.
C.: No, no, I’ve seen this happen one dozen times, at least.
d.: Okay, Cal.E., you say that you’ve seen this happen one dozen times, but your mom and dad only have three sons. What happened to the other nine children? Where did they go?
C.: To some place called “Adoption.” Mom and Dad were just getting the other nine children ready to go there. I don’t know exactly where that is, but it must be a wonderful place.
d.: Why do you say that, Cal.E.?
C.: Because the children get all of their physical needs met, as well as all the love and affection they crave. And the adults get the baby they’ve always wanted. That place must be “Heaven on Earth.”
d.: I’m sure you’re right, Cal.E. It’s a wonderful place for everyone concerned.
And happy National Adoption Day to all adoptive families. A happy belated International Adoption Day (November 9) to those families fitting that description, and a special thank you to Dane, Christian, and Scott, for making our family complete.
