Sometimes late at night
I lie awake and watch her sleeping
She's lost in peaceful dreams
So I turn out the lights and lay there in the dark
And the thought crosses my mind
If I never wake in the morning
Would she ever doubt the way I feel
About her in my heart
If tomorrow never comes
Will she know how much I loved her
Did I try in every way to show her every day
That she's my only one
And if my time on earth were through
And she must face this world without me
Is the love I gave her in the past
Gonna be enough to last
If tomorrow never comes
'Cause I've lost love ones in my life
Who never knew how much I loved them
Now I live with the regret
That my true feelings for them never were revealed
So I made a promise to myself
To say each day how much she means to me
And avoid that circumstance
Where there's no second chance to tell her how I feel
If tomorrow never comes
Will she know how much I loved her
Did I try in every way to show her every day
That she's my only one
And if my time on earth were through
And she must face this world without me
Is the love I gave her in the past
Gonna be enough to last
If tomorrow never comes
So tell that someone that you love
Just what you're thinking of
If tomorrow never comes

d.: That song provokes a lot of questions in my mind.
C.: Why is that, d.c.?
d.: Because, Cal.E. We aren’t guaranteed tomorrow. And even if it does come, we never know what’s in store for us when the clock strikes one minute past midnight.
C.: Sure we do, d.c. All one must do is study what’s happening on the other side of the international date line. Then, s/he will know what will happen tomorrow!
d.: If that were true, Cal.E., I could manipulate the stock market and become rich overnight! It’s not that simple.
C.: Don’t you remember when everyone in the United States studied what happened to computers and digital clocks in Australia and China in Y2K? That told us what would happen when the date changed to January 1, 2000.
d.: That only told us what machines would do then. It had nothing to do with the way people act. People are unpredictable. If they were more predictable, there would be no use for places like The Human Kennel. The police organizations could just predict what people were going to do, and either stop them from doing it or arrest them before they did.
C.: That’s beginning to sound like a Tom Cruise movie, d.c. Don’t you remember the movie “Vanilla Sky,” where the police could read people’s thoughts and predict what they were going to do? A complete police state is not pleasant. I know that from personal experience.
d.: But it was all a dream! It’s unrealistic to believe anyone can read someone else’s mind, or predict the future. We must do the best we can with our circumstances as they evolve. If tomorrow never comes, we haven’t wasted time worrying about potential situations…
C.: So, drink and eat catnip, and don’t plan for the future?
d.: No, Cal.E. That’s not what I meant. One study found that people spend the majority of their time worrying about what might happen. Most of the time, those situations never occur. The few times that they do, one only has control over about two percent of what does happen. In other words, what we can control in the future is in the “margin for error.” It’s best not to waste time worrying about the future unnecessarily. Plan for it, but don’t obsess over it.
C.: Yes, I see. Well, since I’m off work from The Kennel this weekend, I plan to eat all the catnip my stomach can hold. Since it’s Sunday, I need to complete my plan before the clock strikes twelve. When it does, it will be tomorrow, and I’ll need to go to work at The Kennel. TTFN, d.c.
d.: Yes, Cal.E., tata for now.
