C.: Psst. d.c. I am bored! Hiding out from Tm the Tabby and “The Tuxedo” does not allow me to move around much. Could you send me some reading material?
d.: I can. I am working on my new book now. I am putting the finishing touches on it. I will email you the synopsis. Then, you can
tell me if you want to read the book. I could use some help editing it. You did a good job with “Precision.” This book is called “The Inert Ingredient.’’
“The Inert Ingredient”
Synopsis
Jay Magruder is a police detective with a secret he desperately wants to hide. His trusting nature leads him to let a close friend, who is a clinical instructor at a nursing school, use the morgue at Jay’s precinct to teach his students. The instructor is curious about the cause of death of one of the corpses. Magruder is horrified when he realizes that the corpse the instructor chooses to ask about is connected to the secret he is desperately trying to hide. He must think fast to protect his secret.
Complicating the situation is an insistent female nursing student whom Jay finds very interesting. Alice Jones is even more interested in the mysterious cadaver than her instructor was. Jay falls in love with the nursing student. She is as interested in him as he is in her, so they embark on a dating relationship. The couple quickly becomes intimate.
After Alice becomes pregnant with Jay’s child, the couple marries. After the child is born, Alice confronts her husband about the cadaver in question again. When he refuses to answer, she complains that he is TOO good at keeping secrets. Burdened by guilt and a desire to build trust with his young wife, Magruder decides to tell the person he trusts most in the world his awful secret.
Adding to the stress that his marriage is already under, a former member of the cartel that Jay helped destroy when he worked undercover is trying to kidnap the couple’s first child. The assumption is that Jay will do anything to protect his offspring, including perjuring himself if he is asked to testify in court against the cartel member. Jay is conflicted. He feels he must choose between protecting his family and protecting his secret; as well as the other party involved in the situation. Alice believes that he may choose to protect his secret over his family. This creates more stress than the couple’s marriage can bear.
This is a murder/mystery, a story about a young man’s quest to find lasting love, and a tragedy combined in one book. The conflicted detective neither expects to find love so quickly nor does he intend to reveal his secret to anyone. His first wife is the only person he ever trusts enough to tell the whole story. This fact affects detective James David Magruder for the rest of his life.
