People try to put us d-down (talkin' 'bout my generation)
Just because we get around
(talkin' 'bout my generation)
Things they do look awful c-c-cold
(talkin' 'bout my generation)
I hope I die before I get old
(talkin' 'bout my generation)
d.: (Well, it’s too late for that!)
This is my generation
This is my generation, baby
Why don't you all f-fade away (talkin' 'bout my generation)
And don't try dig what we all s-s-say (talkin' 'bout my generation)
'm not trying to cause a big s-s-sensation (talkin' 'bout my generation)
I'm just talkin' 'bout my g-g-generation (talkin' 'bout my generation)
My generation
This is my generation, baby
Why don't you all f-fade away (talkin' 'bout my generation)
And don't try d-dig what we all s-s-say
(talkin' 'bout my generation)
I'm not trying to cause a big sensation (talkin' 'bout my generation)
I'm just talkin' 'bout my g-generation (talkin' 'bout my generation)
This is my generationThis is my generation, baby
My, my g-generationMy, my, my, my, my generation
People try to put us d-down (talkin' 'bout my generation)
Just because we g-g-get around (talkin' 'bout my generation)
Things they do look awful c-c-cold (talkin' 'bout my generation)
Yeah, I hope I die before I get old (talkin' 'bout my generation)
This is my generation
This is my generation, baby
My, my, my, my, my generation (generation)
Talkin' 'bout my generation (talkin' about)
Talkin' 'bout my generation (my generation)
Talkin' 'bout my generation (my generation)
Talkin' 'bout my generation (this is my generation, baby)
Talkin' 'bout my generation (this is my generation)
Talkin' 'bout my generation (generation)
Talkin' 'bout my generation (this is my generation)
Talkin' 'bout my generation (this is my generation)

d.: Well, my generation has gotten a raw deal. When I was younger, being called a “boomer” was an insult because it meant we were too young to know anything. Now, it’s an insult to be called that because younger people think we don’t know anything about computers. I’ll show them all (if I can just figure out how to turn my new computer on). (ring).
“Oh, hi, Cal.E., what’s going on?
C.: did you remember all the details of the “Game of the millennium’’?
d.: I did. We got slaughtered. That team really did deserve to be ranked number one in the whole state.
C.: Is that all?
d.: Not exactly. That classy, talented team was led by their quarterback/kicker Dan Van Cleve. If I’m not mistaken, he still holds the record for the longest field goal ever kicked on the home field of my alma mater high school. A straight-on kicker rarely kicks a fifty-yard field goal, especially when he’s still in high school.
That quarterback’s name was Dan Van Cleve, who, until recently, held the record for most stolen bases in a season at my alma mater. He went on to play centerfield at the college I graduated from. His senior team featured four players who later played at the major league level. All four earned all star recognition in their careers, even though they didn’t win the College World Series, being beaten by a grand slam in the bottom of the ninth inning in the championship game.
There were two other players on that team that made it to the minor leagues, including Van Cleve. Since he didn’t have a strong enough arm to play the outfield in the major leagues, and his batting average was below average, Dan accepted an invitation to attend Baylor’s prestigious medical school. After he graduated, he became a world-class heart surgeon, working for the University of Mississippi in Jackson.
Sadly, Dr. Dan Van Cleve passed away prematurely in 2013 at the age of fifty-one. Although I never really got to know him well, all accounts of Dan was that, even though he was an incredible athlete and world-class heart surgeon, he was an even better person.
C.: Rest in peace Dr. Dan Van Cleve.
