Cal.E.'s Corner

I burn with desire each time my heart fans the fire To that old flame that burns inside of me She cried when I left her, now I cry to forget her Oh, how foolish I was to ever want to leave

'Cause nobody in his right mind would've left her I had to be crazy to say goodbye Nobody in his right mind would've left her

Even my heart was smart enough to stay behind I still carry her picture; I wish her well With the new love I know she's found by now Each night finds me dreamin', each day I spend thinkin' How much I wish she was still around

'Cause nobody in his right mind would've left her I had to be crazy to say goodbye Nobody in his right mind would've left her

Even my heart was smart enough to stay behind Even my heart was smart enough to stay behind

C.: d.c., I emailed you a gift.

d.: Tickets to George Strait’s one concert a year next spring?! He only plays one venue per year now, at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. How did you get these tickets, and why don’t you want them?

C.: The tickets are too close to the stage. I don’t think my sensitive ears will take that, so I decided to give these two tickets to you. You and Eudora can enjoy the concert, since y’all both enjoy his music. I prefer caterwauling.

d.: How did you come up with these tickets, Cal.E.?

C.: That was my reward for exposing Jonathon Donovan’s plan and saving the State a lot of money. Apparently, our practice manager has season tickets to the rodeo. He gave me these tickets as a reward.

d.: Well, this is a generous gift, but you could have sold these tickets for a lot of money! Don’t you want to try to find a buyer?

C.: No thanks. You’ve done a lot for me, so I thought I would do something for you. I don’t get it, anyway, why is George Strait called the “King of Country Music”?

d.: Because he has produced the most gold and platinum albums in a shorter period than any other country music singer, and he got famous as a fill-in at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo; and, I was there when it happened!

C.: I feel a story coming on!

d.: Yes, Cal.E.., you do. In 1983, I didn’t live in Houston, but my brother and sister-in-law did. During spring break, my parents, sister, and I came to visit my brother and sister-in-law. My brother was given tickets to Rodeo Houston by his employer. The performer who was listed that night was Eddie Rabbitt. However, he came down with the flu. The concert committee called George Strait to fill in for him. The legend is that he hopped off his tractor, took a shower, and came to Houston from San Antonio as quickly as he was able. I don’t know if the last part is true, but I do remember George Strait getting several standing ovations that night. Since that performance boosted him into the stratosphere as a country music legend, George Strait only plays one venue a year after his so-called retirement from singing: The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. He only plays one night, though, so it’s almost impossible to get tickets.

C.: Unless you know a generous cat who is willing to part with her tickets!

d.: Yes, Cal.E. I haven’t even tried to get tickets to that performance. It is too expensive and time-consuming to do that. I do appreciate you giving me these tickets, though. I will use them in good health!

C.: ??!!

d.: It’s just an expression, meaning that I really appreciate these tickets. However, we’re out of time for today, so I will talk to you tomorrow, Cal.E.
