I saw her today at the reception A glass of wine in her hand I knew she would meet her connection At her feet was her footloose man
No, you can't always get what you want You can't always get what you want You can't always get what you want But if you try sometime you'll find You get what you need
I saw her today at the reception A glass of wine in her hand I knew she was gonna meet her connection At her feet was her footloose man
You can't always get what you want You can't always get what you want You can't always get what you want But if you try sometimes, well, you might find You get what you need Ah, yeah Oh
And I went down to the demonstration To get my fair share of abuse Singing, "We're gonna vent our frustration If we don't we're gonna blow a fifty-amp fuse" Sing it to me, honey
You can't always get what you want You can't always get what you want You can't always get what you want But if you try sometimes, well, you just might find You get what you need Ah baby, yeah Ah
I went down to the Chelsea drugstore To get your prescription filled I was standing in line with Mr. Jimmy And, man, did he look pretty ill We decided that we would have a soda My favorite flavor, cherry red I sung my song to Mr. Jimmy Yeah, and he said one word to me, and that was "dead" I said to him
You can't always get what you want, well no You can't always get what you want. I tell you, baby You can't always get what you want, no But if you try sometimes you just might find, uh, mm You get what you need, oh yeah, woo!
Ah, woo!
You get what you need, yeah, oh baby Ah yeah
I saw her today at the reception In her glass was a bleeding man She was practiced at the art of deception Well, I could tell by her blood-stained hands, sing it
You can't always get what you want, yeah You can't always get what you want, ooh yeah, child You can't always get what you want But if you try sometimes you just might find You just might find You get what you need, ah yeah Ah baby, woo!
Ah, you can't always get what you want, no, no, baby You can't always get what you want, you can't now, now You can't always get what you want But if you try sometimes you just might find You just might find that you You get what you need, oh yeah Ah yeah, do that

You Can't Always Get What You Want lyrics © Abkco Music Inc.
C.: (ring) Oh, hi, d.c. what’s going on?
d.: I was about to ask you the same question. Are you, by chance, watching the movie “The Big Chill”?
C.: No, what is that movie about, and why would you think that?
d.: It’s an excellent movie from the 1980s about friends meeting at a funeral after being estranged for years. That song that the Rolling Stones sing is the background music for the opening scene. It’s playing as the friends are viewing the body of one of their friends from the college group of friends.
C.: So, it’s not an excellent Christmas movie, like Die Hard?
d.: No, Cal.E., it’s not. I liked the movie and the song. That song has an excellent message about getting what you need, and not what you want.
C.: Why can’t you always get what you want?
d.: Because, sometimes, what you want isn’t the best thing for you, or for others involved. I can give you numerous examples from my own life, involving career choices and choices in my personal life. The main point of the song is, if you try hard enough, you’ll get what you need, but not necessarily what you want. That is usually the better choice.
C.: I know nurses must study psychology, d.c. And the areas of nursing that you have been involved in require a lot of thinking about your patient’s psyche. But honestly, I was just listening to some classic rock while I enjoyed some catnip on my day off. Catnip has a way of relaxing my brain, even if it makes the rest of my body hyper. I don’t want to think this hard, so why don’t you finish the blog while I finish what I’m dong?
d.: Actually, Cal.E., I think that we’ve covered the subject quite well together. Most humans don’t enjoy doing a lot of thinking. It isn’t the natural thing to do, and, in my job, stopping to think can cost someone his or her life. Nurses are trained to react, not think. We need to know what to do and when to do it without thinking. I guess your job lets your mind wander some, doesn’t it, Cal.E.? Cal.E.?
C.: zzzzz
d.: That’s all the time we have for today, folks. Please join us tomorrow for another episode of Cal.E.’s Corner
