HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Welcome to Cal.E.'s Korner. And now, can you please help me welcome your cohost and namesake of the blog, Cal.E. Katt.
Yes we can!
C.: d.c., thanks for giving me the holiday off yesterday.
T and I had a good time at his training partner's New Years party.
d.: Well, i just had one thing to say. Besides, I don’t really regard January first as a holiday.
C.: Well, it is New Years Day, so I believe that the inhabitants of your home planet will disagree with you. Why don’t you think of January first as a real holiday?
d.: Because, Cal.E., it’s basically a day chosen at random to indicate that Earth having revolved around the sun once.
C.: I see. Well, isn’t that a cause to celebrate?
d.: Why? We didn’t do anything to help the earth rotate around the sun.
C.: You’ve got me there, but can you explain why you say the January first is just a date chosen at random to mark one of Earth’s revolutions around the sun?
d: I can. You see, Pope Gregory was trying to correct the Julian Calendar to make Easter be celebrated on the traditional days that Christians usually celebrate it when he made up the present day calendar. This calendar is commonly known as the Gregorian Calendar for that reason. However, as smart as Pope Gregory was, even he couldn’t make the twelve months come out to an even number of days. That’s why February only has 28 days. And that left the beginning of the year just over a week after the Winter Solstice occurred.
C.: So, New Years day has nothing to do with phases of the moon, or when one of the four solstices occur?
D.: Correct. To me, the only thing worth celebrating is that there are a lot of college football games to watch on that day, but even that has diminished with the new playoff system.
C.: I see where your coming from, but did you really think that Army or, for that matter, Boise State had a chance at winning the national championship in NCAA Bowl Subdivision football?
D.: No, not really. But is was more interesting when more than one or two teams had a shot at winning the mythical championship witch was decided on paper, not on the field.
C.: Explain, please.
d.: The national championship was formerly decided by a vote of sportswriters in one poll, and coaches in another. I put more stock in the latter than the former, but most people would disagree with me. These polls still do, however, factor into the formula that the NCAA uses to determine the twelve teams with a shot at winning the national championship. The only reason to watch any other bowl games is if one of your favorite teams is playing in one..
Anyway, unless you’re a gambling addict, there really is no reason to watch all forty-seven bowl games when only a handful are tied to the national championship. Sitting still for that long will age you quickly.
C.: A gambling addict?
d.: Yes, and there are a lot of people who like to gamble on any and everything. Some even bet on whether the coin will turn up heads or tails at the Super Bowl. That’s just obsessive, in my opinion. One should only bet on things s/he can control, unless that person has access to a time machine and find out who won the game. Then, s/e could come back to the present and bet on the team that wins. But how many people have access to a time machine?
C.:....I just remembered; I have something very important to do, so I guess that’s all the time we have for today, folks. Please join us tomorrow for another episode of Cal.E.’s Korner.
