Live from Cut-N-Shoot Texas, it’s the Joe Groan Show here on KIND/KING Conroe Cut-N-Shoot, the number one-hundred and fifth rated radio station in the northeast corner of Southeast Texas. And now, here’s your host, Joe Groan!

JG:  Oh, oh, oh!! It’s the most wonderful time of the year! The Animal Olympics are over, well almost.; the first event of the Animal Olympics, the tortoise ten k is still in its second heat. Only six more to go, guys, before the quarterfinals.

and two charities have benefitted from the generosity of the Co-All Around Best Animals in the Animal Olympics. Tucker Tucker Two, a.k.a. The Cat Fighter Formerly Known As The tuxedo (who really needs a shorter nickname) Now Simply Known As T Because Triple T Was Already Taken and the Electrifying, Lively Awesome Cat Fighter otherwise known as ELAC decided to spilt the one meow-illion dollars they earned and send it to the other cat’s favorite charity. T and ELAC battled to a draw in the Pong championship at the games and decided to call it a draw and split the money.

Additionally, the Astros are on a tear, the Rockets are back to trading for veterans although “Trader Daryl” Morey” is long gone.. The Texans are the favorite to take the AFC South again  when the NFL season cranks back up. It would seem that all is well in the Bayou City in sports, but is it?

Houston has been passed over for a WNBA franchise, and there is no NHL team in the nations fourth largest city.

Until our neighbors to the north had a hockey team move to Dallas, no one really cared about hockey. The is the deep south, where hockey isn;t played with any regularity, but the WNBA is a different story. The Houston Comets won the first four championships after the WNBA was established, and they were well supported. After a chain of blunders with this team being sold twice, the team folded. There hasn’t been a WNBA team in Houston in this century, and it appears that will continue for a few more years.

Granted, when the Rockets were down and the Oilers were threatening to leave Houston (and then did), attendance was down at their games. The Astros didn’t attract much attention the last few years they played in the Eighth Wonder of the World–the Houston Astrodome, but a new stadium gave both the Rockets and the Astros more attendance. This resulted in the Astros appearing in the World series five times in this century, winning it twice. The Rockets are also on the rise after winning the NBA championship twice in back-to-back years (1994-95), and the Texans are winning their division almost every year now, but something is missing.

Counting the soccer championships that Houston’s mens’ and womens’ teams have won, the city’s world championships are in double digits.  Everyone knows, though, that in the American South and particularly in Texas, American football rules, and the Bayou City is devoid of a championship in the flagship sport of the state.

Yes, the Oilers should have gone to the Super Bowl a couple of times, but a blown catt (that convinced teh “powers that be” the instant replay was necessary to help the officials officiate the game) and an epic meltdown cost that team a trip to the Super Bowl. That organization only reached the Super Bowl after changing locations. And the Texans? They’ve never even been to the AFC championship game, despite all the AFC South championships. So, let’s hope that changes in the near future.

I’m Joe Groan, and you are somebody else.
